Sporting Lagos 0-0 Ikorodu City | NPFL 2026/27 | Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan
The first-ever NPFL meeting between the two Lagos clubs was full of noise, tackles and near misses, but it produced no goals. Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City shared a point on Wednesday night in a game that was more battle than showcase.
The occasion
The fixture was a rescheduled Matchday 2 game, first set for September 6 and then postponed. It was a landmark in its own right, as the first top-flight meeting between the two Lagos sides. A packed Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan gave it a proper derby atmosphere.
Ikorodu City arrived in good spirits after a 2-0 win over defending champions Enugu Rangers on Sunday. Sporting Lagos were coming off a 1-1 draw with Barau FC.
The game
It was a tight, physical contest. Both teams battled for possession, and as the intensity rose, Ikorodu City collected several yellow cards. At one stage both sides were reduced to ten men, and the game became stop-start.
Ikorodu City’s coach felt his side was at its best in a disciplined first half. Sporting Lagos tried to go over the top, with long balls aimed at the space behind the Ikorodu defence. Neither side could convert its moments, and Ikorodu’s striker had a frustrating night, struggling to make clean contact on several chances.
What the coaches said
Sporting Lagos coach Jeffery Buter called the draw a fair outcome, given the terrible refereeing the club has experienced over the last couple of games. He praised Ikorodu’s defensive display and said their aggressive approach was expected.
On the team’s profligacy in front of goal, Buter said the club is working more on its ability to finish and that it will only get better. Asked about the reliance on striker Aliyu Baba, he said the squad has other strikers and that Aliyu himself will get better. Striker Haruna Hadi also voiced frustration over the missed chances and raised concerns about the officiating.
Ikorodu coach Bright Ozebagbe had mixed feelings. He believed his team did enough to win, and praised the depth of his squad, saying the second-half substitutes kept things stable.
The refereeing debate
Buter’s comments on the officials come as the NPFL has warned clubs that public criticism of the league or its officials will draw disciplinary action, so it will be interesting to see whether they lead to anything.
What it means
The point keeps both clubs in the mix. Reports differ on the exact table positions after the game. One report has Ikorodu City seventh with 9 points and Sporting Lagos ninth with 8, while another put Ikorodu on 8 points before the result was added. Either way, both sit comfortably in the middle of the table.
For Sporting Lagos, the focus is on turning chance creation into goals, and Buter is confident that work on the training ground will pay off. For Ikorodu, a draw after a win over the champions is a decent return. With the first Lagos derby done, both teams now turn their attention to their next fixtures, and the bragging rights remain undecided until the return leg.
