Sporting Lagos travel to Jos on Sunday with an opportunity to strengthen their reputation as the NPFL’s best away side this season. Their visit to Plateau United presents an intriguing contest between a team riding high after an emphatic victory and another whose performances on the road have become a defining feature of its campaign.

Plateau United head into the encounter following a convincing 4–0 victory over Kano Pillars, while Sporting Lagos come off a 2–1 comeback win against Bendel Insurance. Both sides have reasons to be confident, but the question is whether Sporting can extend their impressive away form against a Plateau United side eager to make home advantage count.

Plateau United arrive with a statement victory

Plateau United sent a strong message in their previous outing, dismantling Kano Pillars 4–0 at home. Paul Samson opened the scoring in the third minute, Ekundayo Ojo added a second shortly before half-time, and late goals from Samuel Ayanrinde and Nenrot Silas completed the victory.

The result demonstrated Plateau’s ability to threaten throughout a match and will give the team confidence ahead of Sporting’s visit. However, reproducing that performance against a side with an impressive away record presents a different challenge.

Plateau will want to impose themselves early, take advantage of their home support and prevent Sporting from settling into the game. An early goal could put the visitors under pressure, but the hosts must also be wary of committing too many players forward against a team that has shown it can collect results away from Lagos.

Sporting Lagos: The league’s best travellers

Sporting’s away performances give this fixture an interesting dimension. Rather than approaching the trip to Jos as a team simply hoping to limit the damage, Sporting have demonstrated this season that they can travel, compete and collect valuable points.

Their away victories over Inter Lagos and Enyimba, alongside a draw against Kano Pillars, provide evidence of their ability to deliver results outside Lagos. Maintaining that form against Plateau United would further strengthen their position and reinforce the importance of their away performances to their season.

For Sporting Theory, this is the central storyline: can Sporting’s away strength withstand one of the league’s most confident sides on their own ground?

The challenge is not just about defending well. Sporting must manage the tempo, remain composed under pressure and recognise the moments when they can hurt Plateau. Their away record gives them reason to believe, but sustaining it will require concentration and discipline across the full 90 minutes.

A comeback that could build momentum

Sporting’s 2–1 victory over Bendel Insurance offered another encouraging sign. Kayode Oke put Bendel ahead inside the opening minute, but Sporting responded through Victor Samuel in the 14th minute before Gafar Olaniyan scored the winner in the 22nd minute.

The response mattered. Sporting recovered from a damaging start and turned the match around before half-time, demonstrating their capacity to respond when circumstances do not go according to plan.

Victor’s equaliser and Gafar’s winner gave Sporting the three points, but the performance also raised questions about how the team can sustain its attacking threat. Scoring twice in quick succession was encouraging; carrying that decisiveness into a difficult away fixture will be the next test.

Sporting cannot afford to rely on comebacks as a recurring strategy. Conceding early in Jos could make the task considerably harder, particularly against a Plateau side coming off a four-goal performance.

The midfield battle: Aondona, Hadi and Victor hold the key

Sporting Lagos’ midfield offers an interesting tactical dimension heading into Sunday’s encounter. The combination of Jacob Aondona, Haruna Hadi and Samuel Victor gives Jeffrey Buter three players with different responsibilities, and how effectively they complement one another could prove crucial against Plateau United.

Aondona operates as the defensive midfielder, providing protection in front of the back line and helping Sporting maintain their structure when possession is lost. His role will be particularly important against a Plateau side coming off a four-goal performance. Sporting cannot afford to leave their defence exposed whenever they commit players forward.

Victor operates in the number 10 role, connecting midfield with attack and looking to create opportunities in the spaces between the opposition’s midfield and defence. His ability to receive the ball, turn and find forward passes could help Sporting progress up the pitch rather than spend long periods defending.

Hadi, meanwhile, advances from midfield and contributes further up the pitch. His forward movement adds another dimension to Sporting’s attack, but it also makes Aondona’s positioning important. When Hadi pushes forward, Sporting need their defensive midfielder to maintain the team’s balance and ensure that the space behind the advancing players is adequately protected.

The relationship between these three roles could be decisive in Jos. If Aondona can provide defensive security, Victor can link the lines effectively and Hadi can make his forward runs at the right moments, Sporting will have a better chance of challenging Plateau rather than simply reacting to the home side’s play.

The challenge is maintaining that balance for 90 minutes. Plateau’s attacking confidence means Sporting must be disciplined when they lose possession, while still giving Victor and Hadi enough freedom to influence the game going forward.

Aliyu Baba’s selection adds another talking point

Aliyu Baba was dropped to the bench for Sporting’s victory over Bendel Insurance, a decision that has prompted discussion among supporters. Some have suggested that his struggles to convert chances may have contributed to his omission, although the reasoning behind the selection decision has not been confirmed.

Aliyu’s situation is interesting because his work rate is rarely the issue. He is a forward who gives considerable effort, works for the team and continues to get into positions where he can influence a match. The frustration comes when those opportunities do not translate into goals.

For a team seeking consistency, that presents a difficult balance. A forward’s contribution cannot be measured by goals alone, particularly when his movement, pressing and willingness to work create opportunities for teammates. But chances must eventually become goals, especially in matches where Sporting may have fewer opportunities away from home.

A return to the starting line-up against Plateau United is a possibility worth watching. Aliyu’s ability to work for the team and get into scoring positions could give Sporting another attacking option, but the question remains whether he can turn those opportunities into goals.

If he starts, the trip to Jos could offer him an opportunity to answer his critics with a decisive contribution. If he remains on the bench, Sporting will need their selected attackers to make the most of the chances created by Victor, Hadi and the rest of the team.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Buter, who must weigh Aliyu’s overall contribution against the team’s need for greater efficiency in front of goal.

History offers another challenge

The previous league meetings between these sides provide additional context. The available head-to-head record lists Plateau United victories of 1–0 in December 2023 and 2–1 in June 2024.

Those results favour Plateau, but they do not determine Sunday’s outcome. Both teams have evolved since those encounters, and their performances in the current campaign provide a more immediate basis for assessing the contest.

For Sporting, a positive result in Jos would offer an opportunity to challenge that recent head-to-head pattern while strengthening their position in the early-season standings.

Three things Sporting must get right

1. Start with concentration.

The early goal conceded against Bendel Insurance should serve as a reminder of how quickly a match can become complicated. Sporting recovered impressively in Lagos, but they will want to avoid giving Plateau an early advantage.

2. Protect their defensive structure.

Plateau’s recent scoring display makes organisation and communication essential. Aondona’s positioning will be important in protecting the back line, particularly when Hadi advances and Sporting commit players forward.

3. Make their attacking moments count.

Victor’s creativity, Hadi’s forward movement and the work of Sporting’s attacking players could create opportunities against Plateau. Whether Aliyu starts or is introduced later, Sporting will need greater efficiency in front of goal if they are to turn promising moments into points.

Verdict: An away record to defend, a statement to make

Plateau United have home advantage and the confidence of a 4–0 victory over Kano Pillars. Sporting Lagos, however, arrive with an impressive away record and the momentum of a comeback win against Bendel Insurance.

That contrast makes this more than a routine league fixture. Plateau will seek to impose themselves in front of their supporters, while Sporting have an opportunity to demonstrate that their performances on the road are a genuine strength rather than a temporary run.

A draw would be a useful result for Sporting, while a victory would represent a significant statement about their ambitions this season. Plateau remain a formidable opponent, but Sporting have shown enough away from home to make this a contest worth watching.

Can Plateau United end Sporting Lagos’ impressive away run, or will the Lagos side once again prove that travelling does not diminish their threat?
