Matchday 6 fallout | NPFL 2026/27
Ranchers Bees’ goalless draw with Rivers United is now being talked about for the wrong reasons. The league has fined the club N5,000,000 for breaches of its Frameworks and Rules following the fixture. It has also ordered the club to identify a player who was captured on video physically attacking a Rivers United player.
The sanctions
The league’s ruling has two parts:
- A N5,000,000 fine for breaches of the Frameworks and Rules at the end of the Matchday 6 game.
- A disclosure order. Ranchers Bees must name the player seen on video attacking a Rivers United player, so the league can begin disciplinary action. The deadline is today, Thursday, October 1.
If the club misses the deadline, it may face further sanctions. How the league proceeds against the player will depend on what the video shows and what the club reports.
The match
The game was played on Monday at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. Rivers United were held to a 0-0 draw, which ended their two-match winning streak but kept them unbeaten this season. The draw moved Ranchers Bees from 15th to 11th in the standings.
It was a tense, evenly matched contest. Both sides had chances, but poor finishing meant neither could take all three points. Finidi George admitted afterwards that he thought Ranchers Bees were ahead in the first half before his side improved in the second.
Frustration over officiating
The mood around the game had already turned sour at the final whistle. Ranchers Bees coach Usman Abd’Allah complained that his side should have had two penalties and said the club had already been punished by the referee. He did add that he was not trying to incite any violence. The denied appeals reportedly drew fierce protests from the technical bench and the home supporters.
The league has also been tightening its stance on conduct more broadly. Separately, the NPFL has warned that public criticism of the league or its match officials will draw disciplinary action. That warning was a general memo to clubs, and the Ranchers Bees sanctions are a distinct ruling.
What’s next
On the pitch, Ranchers Bees travel to Ilorin to face Kwara United next. Rivers United will next face Katsina United. Off the pitch, all eyes will be on whether the club names the player on time and what punishment follows. Scenes like this undermine a league trying to build trust between clubs, officials and fans, and the league’s quick response suggests it wants to draw a line.
