The Hijack Is Complete: Haruna Hadi Is a Sporting Lagos Player, and the NPFL Just Got Spicier

Forget the transfer sagas you’ve seen play out in the Premier League with their tedious “will-he-won’t-he” press conferences. The Nigerian Premier Football League just delivered its own version of theatre, and it ended with Shooting Stars SC holding the wrong end of the stick.

Sporting Lagos have officially completed the signing of attacking midfielder Haruna Hadi from relegated Remo Stars, and if you’ve been following the saga, you already know this deal has more twists than a Lagos danfo route during rush hour.

The Setup: A Man Without a Club

When Remo Stars crashed out of the NPFL top flight at the end of the 2025/26 season, the football world’s attention immediately turned to their prize asset. Hadi, 25, had just wrapped up what many are calling his breakout campaign, and suddenly every club with ambition and a checkbook wanted a piece of him.

For weeks, the smart money was on Shooting Stars SC. The Ibadan giants, freshly qualified for continental football via the CAF Confederations Cup, needed reinforcements and made their intentions loud and clear. Reports had them submitting offers, engaging in “fierce” transfer battles, and generally acting like the deal was theirs to lose.

It was theirs to lose. And lose it they did.

The Hijack

Enter Sporting Lagos, newly promoted, hungry, and apparently not interested in playing by the expected script. According to NPFL insider Mike The Pundit, the Noisy Lagosians swooped in late and pulled off what can only be described as a straight up hijack, snatching Hadi away from under Shooting Stars’ nose. The margin, according to reports, was almost comically thin: Shooting Stars’ offer was reportedly less than half a percentage point higher than what Sporting Lagos put on the table. All that positioning, all that “frontrunner” talk, undone by a rounding error and a club that clearly wanted it more.

The final terms: a deal that will take Hadi to Lagos through 2028, making him the club’s second signing of the transfer window after Valentine Ugwu.

Why Everyone Wanted Him

So what makes a midfielder from a relegated club the most fought over signature in the NPFL off season? The numbers do plenty of the talking. Across his time at Remo Stars, Hadi racked up double digit goal contributions from midfield, was a fixture in a Sky Blue Stars side that won a league title, and even got continental minutes in the CAF Champions League.

But it’s the eye test that really has scouts buzzing. Nigerian football analyst Samuel Areo compared Hadi’s style to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, praising his footballing IQ, his eye for a defense splitting pass, and his knack for danger in the final third. The caveat, and there’s always a caveat, is defensive work rate. Areo was blunt about it: don’t expect much tracking back. This is a player built to hurt teams, not to chase them down.

Hadi has also worn the national colors, turning out for Nigeria’s home based Super Eagles in a CHAN tournament appearance, adding another layer of pedigree to a resume that already reads like a highlight reel.

The Poetry of It All

Here’s the detail that adds a nice touch to this transfer: Remo Stars are based in Ogun State, so this move actually takes Hadi out of Ogun and into Lagos for the first time. Reports suggest the pull of relocating to Lagos, rather than looking further afield, played a part in his decision making, with Sporting Lagos offering him a fresh base in Nigeria’s biggest city.

Meanwhile, Sporting Lagos are writing their own redemption arc in real time. Just two seasons removed from their own relegation heartbreak, the kind that had fans in tears on the terraces, they’re back in the top flight and making moves that scream intent. Landing Hadi over a continental bound rival isn’t just a good bit of business. It’s a statement: we’re not here to make up the numbers.

What This Means Going Forward

With the 2026/27 NPFL season tentatively kicking off the weekend of August 27 to 29, all eyes will now be on how quickly Hadi can transplant his Remo Stars form into a Sporting Lagos shirt. If Areo’s read on his game is right, the Noisy Lagosians have just added a genuine creative spark to their midfield, someone who can pick a lock in the final third even if he’s not going to be winning many last ditch tackles.

For Shooting Stars, there’s a harder conversation to have. Being the “long considered frontrunner” and still losing the race is the kind of result that invites scrutiny back at the club. For Remo Stars, letting go of one of their most electric performers is the bitter cost of relegation, proof that in Nigerian football, just like everywhere else, staying up isn’t just about pride. It’s about keeping your best players.

One thing’s for sure: Lagos football just got a lot more interesting, and Haruna Hadi is about to find out what it feels like to be the most watched man in the league.
