Nigeria’s four representatives have completed the first legs of their opening CAF ties, and the results have offered plenty to discuss.
It was a mixed but ultimately encouraging weekend for Nigerian football on the continent.
Rangers International and Rivers United both played out 1–1 draws in the CAF Champions League, while Shooting Stars and El-Kanemi Warriors gave Nigeria victories in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Four clubs. Four different stories. But one common objective: getting Nigeria back into the conversation in African club football.
Here is our Sporting Theory review of the weekend.
🔵 RIVERS UNITED 1–1 SAN PEDRO
A valuable draw in Côte d’Ivoire
Of all Nigeria’s Champions League results, Rivers United’s 1–1 draw away to FC San Pedro arguably carries the most weight.
The Pride of Rivers travelled to the Laurent Pokou Stadium knowing they were facing a difficult away assignment, and after a goalless first half, the Ivorian hosts eventually broke the deadlock through Issouf Dosso in the 55th minute.
More importantly, Rivers United did not collapse.
Instead, they found a response.
Substitute Douglas Iyowuna came off the bench and equalised in the 69th minute, just three minutes after his introduction. His finish rescued a result that could become extremely valuable when the tie moves to Nigeria.
Sporting Theory verdict: Positive
There is still work to do, particularly considering the defensive mistake that allowed San Pedro to take the lead.
But recovering from an away deficit against a competitive Ivorian side shows character.
Now the responsibility shifts to Uyo.
Rivers United know exactly what they need: win at home and progress.
🔴 RANGERS 1–1 AS SOBEMAP
Champions held when they should have taken control
For the reigning Nigerian champions, this result will feel considerably less satisfying.
Rangers International entered the tie as the Nigerian champions and were expected to make their home advantage count against Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap.
They started positively and eventually took the lead through Chidozie Iwundu, who reacted quickest inside the box to put Rangers ahead.
But the lead did not last.
Sobemap found an equaliser after the break and Rangers were forced to settle for 1–1.
That is not a disastrous result, Rangers are still very much alive in the tie — but it represents a missed opportunity.
When you are the Nigerian champions and have the home leg, you want to take an advantage into the return fixture.
Instead, Rangers now have a much more uncomfortable trip ahead.
Sporting Theory verdict: Underwhelming
Rangers have the experience and pedigree to navigate this tie, but they made their own job harder.
The message for the return leg is simple:
Be better. Be calmer. Finish the job.
⭐ SHOOTING STARS 1–0 CS SFAXIEN
3SC are back in Africa – and they started with a statement
This is the result that will probably mean the most to Nigerian football romantics.
After 27 years away from continental football, Shooting Stars returned to the African stage against one of Tunisia’s most recognisable clubs.
And they won.
1–0.
Lucky Emmanuel’s 25th-minute goal proved decisive as Shooting Stars secured a narrow first-leg victory at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
But the significance goes beyond the scoreline.
Shooting Stars were not facing an unknown opponent. CS Sfaxien have a long continental history and have previously won the Confederation Cup multiple times.
For 3SC, this was therefore more than just a preliminary-round match.
It was a reminder that Shooting Stars belong on this stage.
The only frustration is that the advantage could have been bigger.
A 1–0 lead is useful, but it leaves the door open.
And now comes the difficult part.
Sporting Theory verdict: Very positive
Shooting Stars have given themselves something to defend in Tunisia.
They have also given Nigerian football something to look forward to.
But they cannot travel to Sfax thinking the job is done.
It isn’t.
🟡 EL-KANEMI WARRIORS 3–0 UDIB
The biggest Nigerian statement of the weekend
If one Nigerian club can look back at this weekend and say, “Job done,” it is El-Kanemi Warriors.
The Maiduguri club produced the most convincing Nigerian result of the opening round, defeating Guinea-Bissau’s União Desportiva Internacional de Bissau 3–0 in Ikenne.
And the performance had a clear standout.
Nnamdi Mejuobi.
The forward scored twice, including a penalty, while Dayo Wahab added another to complete a comfortable victory.
Three goals without reply puts El-Kanemi in an extremely strong position heading into the return leg.
Unlike Rangers and Shooting Stars, they do not have to spend the second leg desperately chasing an advantage.
They have one.
A big one.
Sporting Theory verdict: Outstanding
The biggest danger now is complacency.
A 3–0 first-leg lead is commanding, but continental football has a habit of punishing teams that believe a tie is finished before the second whistle.
El-Kanemi must approach the return leg professionally.
If they do, they should be looking forward to the next round.
🇳🇬 SO, HOW DID NIGERIA DO?
Looking at the four results together, Nigeria can be reasonably satisfied.
CAF Champions League
Rivers United 1–1 San Pedro
Rangers 1–1 Sobemap
Two draws -but two very different feelings.
Rivers United can return home encouraged by an away draw after coming from behind.
Rangers, meanwhile, will probably feel they left something on the table.
CAF Confederation Cup
Shooting Stars 1–0 CS Sfaxien
El-Kanemi Warriors 3–0 UDIB
This is where Nigeria really delivered.
Both sides won.
El-Kanemi produced the biggest scoreline, while Shooting Stars produced perhaps the most emotionally significant result given their return to continental football and the quality of their opposition.

Three goals, clean sheet and a commanding advantage.

A historic return and a valuable victory against CS Sfaxien.

An important away draw after falling behind.

Still in control of their destiny, but a home draw against Sobemap leaves plenty to improve.
🇳🇬 THE BIGGER PICTURE
The results are encouraging, but Nigeria should not get carried away.
The preliminary round is only the beginning.
Rivers United and Rangers still have work to do. Shooting Stars have to protect their slender advantage against CS Sfaxien. And El-Kanemi have to complete what they started.
But there is something encouraging about seeing four Nigerian clubs competing across Africa and, importantly, none of them losing their opening first leg.
Two draws.
Two wins.
Zero defeats.
Now comes the real test.
Can all four finish the job?
Because Nigerian football does not just need clubs to participate in Africa.
We need them to stay there.
