Twenty-seven years is a very long time to wait for a moment like this.
For a generation of Shooting Stars supporters, continental football had become something spoken about in the past tense. The great African nights of the Oluyole Warriors belonged to another era, another generation of players and another Nigerian football landscape.
On Saturday, September 5, 2026, that wait finally ended.
And Shooting Stars did not mark their return to Africa with a defeat, a cautious draw or a sentimental appearance.
They won.
A solitary goal from Lucky Emmanuel was enough to give the Oluyole Warriors a 1–0 victory over Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
For 3SC, this is much more than a result.
It is a reminder that the club’s name still belongs on the African stage.
Shooting Stars came into this game carrying an enormous amount of history. Their last continental appearance was in 1999, meaning an entirely new generation of supporters had grown up without seeing their club compete in Africa.
That made Saturday’s game emotional before a ball was even kicked.
But once the whistle went, sentiment had to disappear.
CS Sfaxien were not coming to Nigeria to participate in Shooting Stars’ homecoming celebration.
They came to compete.
And that is what makes this victory particularly significant.
Shooting Stars had already started the new NPFL season positively, defeating Inter Lagos 2–1, while Sfaxien entered this tie with their own confidence after beginning their Tunisian league campaign unbeaten.
