The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season begins in Ibadan on Friday, and the league could hardly have asked for a more intriguing opening fixture.
Shooting Stars will host newly promoted Inter Lagos at the Lekan Salami Stadium in the first game of the new campaign.
On paper, the advantage appears to belong to the home side. Shooting Stars finished third in the NPFL last season with 60 points, while Inter Lagos are entering the top flight for the first time after securing promotion from the Nigeria National League.
But this may not be the straightforward opening-day victory many expect.
Home advantage could be decisive
Shooting Stars were one of the strongest home sides in the NPFL last season.
Their 2025/26 home record was outstanding: 15 wins, three draws and just one defeat from 19 matches.
They scored 33 goals at home and conceded only 14.
That record makes the Lekan Salami Stadium one of the biggest factors heading into Friday’s game.
However, there is a warning sign.
Shooting Stars have struggled to start recent seasons strongly. Over their last five opening-day fixtures, they have managed just one win, alongside three draws and one defeat.
So while history suggests they are difficult to beat in Ibadan, it does not necessarily suggest they will blow Inter Lagos away.
A new coach adds another variable
Shooting Stars will begin the campaign under Salisu Yusuf after the club parted ways with Nurudeen Aweroro just two weeks before the start of the season.
Yusuf brings considerable Nigerian top-flight experience, having previously worked with Rangers, Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United, as well as the national team.
His experience could be crucial, particularly in managing the pressure surrounding an opening-day fixture.
The problem is time.
Yusuf has had very little opportunity to implement his ideas, meaning Shooting Stars are likely to rely heavily on the foundations already established within the squad.
That could make the first few matches under the new coach unpredictable.
Inter Lagos are not simply “new boys”
Inter Lagos may be making their NPFL debut, but they have already demonstrated that they can handle pressure.
They finished top of their NNL conference with 29 points from 15 matches before competing in the Super 4.
They also defeated Sporting Lagos 1–0 in the final round of the competition.
Coach Shakiru Biodun Giwa is expected to retain much of the squad that secured promotion, giving Inter an important advantage: continuity.
While Shooting Stars are adapting to a new coach, Inter’s players already know what their coach expects from them.
The 0–0 could be significant
Perhaps the most interesting recent meeting between the sides came in pre-season.
Shooting Stars and Inter Lagos played out a goalless draw on August 4.
Pre-season results should obviously be treated carefully, but the result provides a useful indication of what could happen on Friday.
Inter Lagos have already shown that they can frustrate Shooting Stars.
If they can maintain their defensive organisation when the points actually matter, the hosts could find themselves in a difficult game.
How the game could play out
I expect Shooting Stars to control more of the possession and territory.
Playing at home, they should be the more aggressive side and will likely attempt to put Inter under pressure early.
Inter, meanwhile, have little reason to chase the game.
Their best strategy could be to remain compact, frustrate the hosts and wait for opportunities on the counter.
The longer the match remains goalless, the greater the pressure on Shooting Stars.
That makes the opening goal crucial.
If 3SC score early, the game could open up and a comfortable victory becomes possible.
If Inter reach half-time without conceding, however, the game could become increasingly tense.
Why I am predicting 1–0
The temptation is to predict a comfortable Shooting Stars victory based on experience, home advantage and last season’s third-place finish.
I am not convinced.
Shooting Stars have lost several important players, including last season’s leading assist provider Ayobami Junior, while their attacking output was already relatively modest last season.
Inter Lagos, meanwhile, have retained much of the group that earned promotion and have already shown that they can make this particular opponent uncomfortable.
For those reasons, I expect a tight contest.
Sporting Theory prediction: Shooting Stars 1–0 Inter Lagos
Shooting Stars should have enough quality and experience to edge the game, particularly with the Lekan Salami Stadium behind them.
But I expect Inter Lagos to make their NPFL debut a difficult one for the hosts.
A 2–0 Shooting Stars victory is certainly possible, particularly if they score early.
But my stronger prediction is a narrow 1–0 win for the Oluyole Warriors.
The NPFL is back.
And it starts with a South-West derby.
