A game marred by controversy before it even ended

What should have been a straightforward FA Cup tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium instead descended into one of the most troubling afternoons in recent Ogun State football memory. The NNL side Stormers SC claimed a 3 to 2 victory, but the scoreline was the least of the day’s talking points.

Controversy began on the pitch when a Stormers SC player received a second yellow card and the subsequent red, only for the referee to inexplicably reverse the decision after prolonged pressure from Stormers SC officials on the touchline. By his own account, the referee had confirmed the dismissal twice before capitulating.

As the clock ran down, the Stormers SC coach crossed a further line. He aggressively confronted an assistant referee and went as far as slapping him. He was shown a red card. These incidents alone warranted serious scrutiny. But the worst was still to come.

After the Final Whistle

Players targeted, then the media officer

At the final whistle, Stormers SC players turned on their opponents, many of whom are under 17 years old, chasing and physically intimidating them around the pitch. Seeing his captain and younger teammates being manhandled, the media officer stepped onto the pitch to shield his players and began recording a Stormers SC player who was being restrained by others.

It was at this moment that Lekan Kelani, the General Manager of Stormers SC, struck from behind. He slapped the media officer and knocked his phone to the ground. The screen guard absorbed the blow, but the attack did not stop there.

“He charged at me again, grabbed my trousers as if I were a criminal, and held onto me for several minutes.”

Kelani then grabbed the media officer by the trousers and physically restrained him for several minutes. During this time, Stormers SC players threatened further violence if he attempted to break free. He eventually escaped and had to be escorted out of the stadium for his own safety, only to discover outside that he had lost his face cap and earphones in the melee.

The Response

The FA acts but the call for more is growing louder

The Ogun State Football Association moved swiftly, announcing the indefinite suspension of the implicated Stormers SC officials. They are required to appear before the OGSFA Disciplinary Committee this Saturday. It is a necessary first step but for those who witnessed the day’s events, it may not feel like enough.

Violence was committed against a match official on the pitch. Violence was committed against a media officer trying to protect teenage players. A referee was pressured into reversing a lawful decision in front of everyone. And through all of it, the club’s most senior football administrator, its General Manager, was not a bystander. He was a participant.

The media officer has called on the Ogun State FA, the NFF, and football supporters across Nigeria to demand accountability: “Individuals like Mr. Lekan Kelani should have no place in our football if the sport is to grow with integrity, safety, and respect.”
