Why Barcelona Really Walked Away from Signing Rashford

Spanish outlet Sport has revealed the full picture behind Barcelona’s decision to step back from a permanent deal for Marcus Rashford, and it is not simply about the player’s form. The Catalan club’s sporting leadership, initially willing to trigger his purchase clause, pumped the brakes after running the numbers on what a full commitment would actually cost and what it would cost them elsewhere.

The price tag that didn’t flex

The sticking point, according to the report, was the rigidity of the deal structure. Manchester United had locked in a purchase option of €30 million with no room for negotiation or discount. On its own, that figure might be manageable. But stacked on top of Rashford’s wage demands, which would have placed him as the highest earner in the Barcelona squad, the total financial commitment became difficult to justify.

Barcelona reportedly explored whether a longer-term contract could be structured to reduce the annual salary load. That avenue closed quickly the total cost remained too high relative to what else the club is planning for the summer transfer window.

The bigger picture: a summer overhaul

Barcelona’s summer plans are ambitious. The club is tracking a world-class striker and is reportedly close to completing a deal for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. Committing heavy wages to Rashford would eat into the budget for those primary targets and complicate the salary cap arithmetic that La Liga clubs must navigate carefully.

The club’s hierarchy also pointed to the experience already present in the squad;  veterans like Robert Lewandowski and João Cancelo provide leadership and quality as justification for spending the remaining budget on high-ceiling young talent rather than proven names with premium salaries.

The alternatives Barcelona are watching

Rather than one expensive option, Barça’s scouting team is now casting a wider net across three promising targets with lower wage profiles.

Each of these players offers offensive upside at a fraction of Rashford’s financial footprint, giving Barcelona more flexibility to strengthen across multiple positions rather than concentrating resources in one deal.

Is the door completely closed for Rashford?

Not entirely, but the window is narrowing. The Sport report makes clear that the final call is tied directly to how Barcelona performs in the critical stretch of this season. If the Bastoni deal goes through and a top striker is secured, the logic for keeping Rashford weakens significantly.

Rashford, for his part, has shown willingness to adapt his salary expectations to make the move work. Whether that goodwill translates into a summer agreement remains an open question, but on the current trajectory, Barcelona appears to be planning for a future that does not include him.
